If salt water kills vegetation, how do palms grow with such success?

Most palm trees grow in rainforests, but you see palms closer to the ocean more than other trees because they are very saltwater resistant, but they rely on freshwater to live--saltwater will kill them (there are several recent articles about Palm Trees in Florida starting to die because of rising sea levels).
