Why do paperback covers lift up?

I have a few new paperback books and when I read them, the front and back covers seem to lift up in the air for some reason. Does anyone have any explanation to this and how I can make it flat?

  1. I know what you mean, I hate that. I usually put another book (or anything heavy) on top of it, and the next morning it's usually flat again.

I don't know why they lift up, but if you don't want them to, and don't mind spending the extra money, you could purchase hardcover books.

  2. It's the heavy plastic face... does not expand in a moist climate, but the cardboard on the other side does. That causes it to curl.

Keep it tight in a bookshelf, or place a hardback book on top. That will minimize the curl.

  3. I'm not really sure, Perhaps the wind blows them up or if the air is cool, Makes them crisper than usual...Other than that I have No idea.

If you don't mind spending a little Extra buy some Hardcovers or a Book Press to flatten them?
