Why do parents feel the need to invent baby names these days?

I have a pretty unique name myself and I wouldn't change it. I think an original name brings out something special in a person.

They are trying to be "Uneek" but all i see is they are being "Stoopid."

I know what you mean. I guess it's because they think that by using a different and unique name, somehow that will rub off on the child. I think it just makes them sound stupid and sets the kid up to hate their name.

well because they wanna be unique and have something that not a lot of ppl/animals have. and remember everyone has a different opinion so what may sound horrendous to you someone else may love. life would be so dull if we all liked the same names and stuck with classic instead of being original. dontcha think??

Tell me about it.  I'm a cashier and it's hard to not laugh at some names on credit cards that i have to process.  Parents are hippies.

i understand wanting to be unique and i like alot of unique names.

however i seen a  question on here where  the girl wants to name her baby boy Asteroids Ringo Balden and she has a daughter name piea cherry Balden. so i dont know some people dont think about the babies future

Im not sure what "weird" is to you, but I do agree some names are kind of strange..but I much prefer different names, than the usual ones that everyone has. When I was in school, I always had to have my last initial because there was ALWAYS another girl with my name...and I HATED IT!

I have not met anyone with my sons name and I love his name, and so does everyone that knows him :)

And I think it is a little more unique than the usual, Jack, John, Matt..not those exact but you know..

well,sometimes people want something unique,they don't want their child's name/s being repeated after another person's name.....

However some of the older names are truly just boring and too many people have the same name: Mike, Mary, Jessica etc... (not bad names just overly used)

I like the idea of newer names but I agree that some are off the charts awful!!!

I would HATE to have a boring run of the mill name.

Having a unique name works well for me because Im no run of the mill girl!

Having this name gave me confidence as a kid that I was special and made me grow to respect individuality :)

Some of them are great! I think it is wonderful when kids have unique names that are pretty. Some of them I don't like so much but who am I to tell parents what to name their child, it's better than having another person with the same name as 3 other people in the room with them. I think it is weird when people just switch the spelling of a name to be unique though.

Maybe I am a traditionalist, but I agree. Whenever I have children, I want them to have traditional names. I guess I have thought more about girl than boy names so I like names like Elizabeth, Michelle, and Sarah.

what do you consider weird? my daughters name is really really long but it is like that for a reason and if she wants to change it later she can. but i dont think she ever will.

because it's nice to be called something different. why should we be called the same old names? unusaul names are nice because there unique.

What's wrong with someone coming up with an original name?  They're not naming your child- so what does it matter to you?
