Why do parties tap the bar with their drinks after toasting?

i think it's an irish custom...you see two people (or more, of course). they toast CHEERS, then all tap their mugs, or bottles, or shot glass on the bar top or table before taking a drink. why do they tap? are they tapping the bar for the bartender? is it for good luck? what?
