  1. Yes...if your body is spending its energy on moving around a lot (leading to increased blood pressure, increased demand for oxygenation, increased use of energy just to move the muscles) then you have less energy to commit towards healing.

However, many doctors are no longer enforcing strict bed-rest post surgery.  This is because remaining sedentary can lead to thrombus (clot) formation which can embolize (dislodge and travel through your blood vessels) and lodge in the lungs, causing pulmonary emboli leading to arrhythmia and death.

So in short, it is good to move a bit to keep the blood flowing, but resting is good for healing.

  2. The body heals itself while you are sleeping.

Also, since your body is busy trying to heal itself, you are using tons of energy.  Most people think they arent using any energy just sitting around, but they are.  And if your body is trying to repair itself, it is usually working on over time.  If you dont rest, you will delay the healing process and feel like exhausted c**p.

  3. During the resting, your body is not only maintaining the undamaged tissues, but doing extra work to remove damaged tissue and build new tissues. (injury or disease ... doesn't matter)

This takes energy. Bed rest is not essential, but returning to your normal lifestyle may slow down the healing.

Having some viruses is like loaning your body to a college student for spring break ...
