Ok people, don't deny doing this at least once or twice EVER.

Like I'll say something people will say is offensive *but true* and then I will always get a, *smile and fake laugh* "Awww, you know what you are wrong because blahblahblah f*** you"

Are people trying to make what I say sound ridiculous when it is clearly true? O.o

  1. No, but to tell you what they really thought would be politically incorrect!

  2. its a reflex.  Most of us have a hard time being honest with ourselves and dealing with painful realities so are instinctive reaction to someone telling us the truth about ourselves is to try to convince ourselves and others that what is being said is a joke.

  3. interesting. i think i do that sometimes too, it's definitely because when people hear things about themselves that's offensive, they don't know how to respond to it and thus they stall with a fake laugh of smile.

think about it though, what would YOU do? curse at them? insult them back?

  4. It's probably come as a surprise to them. Because they were unprepared for what was said to them, they laugh while they're thinking about what to say next. Sometimes it's a response due to the shock of someome's statement.

  5. It depends on the person that is responding.  People normally give fake laughs because it is immediate learned passive or aggressive reaction because they don't know how to properly respond to what was said.  If you say something to someone who know how to or have learned how to be assertive, saying something that offends them you will NOT get that fake laugh but a direct expression of how they felt about what was said they do not like.
