I don't mean 'why did it start?", but why do it AT ALL?

And, sometimes, this is done on wet cobblestone roads. D'oh!

  1. It's cultural thing. Young men (and some not so young) have been doing it for centuries to impress the ladies and show off in general. Think of it as a Mediterranean version of rollerboarding.

  2. Because it's freaking awesome!  If you were a man, you'd understand.

[edit]  I agree that it is idiotic - that's part of the allure.  I don't agree that the animals are being harmed.  It isn't a death wish exactly, but rather a wish to cheat death.

  3. It's a good way to thin out the masses.  The bulls have had an off year this time around.

    I agree -- it's mental.

  4. Maybe because it's fun.

  5. Let them do it. It helps nature by getting rid of those who are too stupid to live. It's all fun and games until they get their a$$es punctured by a hefty set of horns.

  6. It is based on traditions of Spanish culture and a big part of the San Fermin Festival. People, especially young people, love to kick off the partying atmosphere with this macho event.  Yes, it is a rather stupid thing to do, and they all know it, BUT  it is very exciting for the runners, not to mention the onlookers.

  7. I figure they must have a death wish.
