Why do people all over this country ignore the speed limit?

This includes stop signs, yield signs andalso safe bicyciling in this country?

i believe it's the American attitude of being better than everyone and the teenage attitude of being invincible. Also some people...like the second answer...think of driving as being something fun to do, rather than a mode of transportation to get from point A to point B. Not a lot of thought goes into the safety of others. And also, a lot of people are told when they start driving to go as fast as everyone around them and to ignore the speed limit. That's another reason.

One of my friends says that if everyone is speeding (like normally) and he goes anywhere below five miles per hour ABOVE the speed limit, he'll get pulled over for impeding traffic because that's how his uncle taught him.

I drive over the speed limit because I can. It's not how fast you drive...it's how you drive fast. You can drive safely over the speed limit if done intelligently. Anyone here not believe you can drive in the left lane of a 6 lane divided highway at 90MPH IF slower traffic always drives to the right?

No cops around, i finished driving school and just starting to notice all the minor mistakes like changing lanes w/o a signal, doing 5 or 10 over etc.. It ticks me off that im trying to go the speed limit or 1 or 2 over and people fly by me and cut me off

No idea.. I get so sick of watching idiots plow through red lights just because they are in line and feel like they should have been given a chance to get through the intersection.. I will tell you I hate it even worse to get behind the people that drive 40 in a 55. If you can't drive the speed limit find another route for crying out loud...

Its only a crime if you get caught.  Thats what the police are there for.  If i spent 80 grand on a sports car I'd feel entitled to speed a little.  I'd still stop and yield though.

Bicycling has always been dangerous.  I used to ride in my city until i got hit by cars on 4 separate occasions.  Now i walk.

If you notice MOST people do at least 5 over but i would say that a good 50 percent do 10 over.  The simple answer is that most of the time it doesnt hurt ANYONE.  Most accidents occur off of highways where speeds are less.  If you ask most people now they would say that SLOW moving drivers pose a greater threat than people who do 5-10 over.  This includes people who grant the right of way when it is not necessary.  just to touch on the biking issue There are far more cars than bikes so IMHO they need to be the ones to be more careful because they are very susceptible to greater injury than a person in a car.  If people want to speed let them.

because so many people are becoming arrogant and selfish. They think that they know better and that they are invinceable and nothing will ever happen to them. They never take into account the innocent people that might be harmed thinking that the rules will be obeyed and get wiped out by the ones who "know better" than to obey the rules

No different than driving schools teaching learners how to pass the test.... not teach them how to drive. Also how many police there days say that they are "too busy" to chase after those people. Look at how many people who do get fined for doing these things and then never wory about paying the fines.... The only people who are suffering are the ones who obey the rules. I'm Australian and same here too

For one, when a behavior is socially accepted or even considered desirable people tend to reconcile the fact that it's bad for them with the idea that "everybody's doing it.

Too many of the people that grew up in the generation of video games, think it's just another game. But in this game you can actually hurt someone.
