I have a thyroid condition that has put the wieght on me and on meds to regulate metabolism. People who do not have my condition do not understand.

However I am not lazy, I hold down a full time Job and I have a business and I take care of myself hygeinically and have clean clothes as well, and take care of the house.

I have known skinny people that smell horrible. Why is it such an issue with assuming ALL fat people smell when we dont?

Kind intellegent answers only. thanks

  1. I never understood why people have to judge others in this way. To me, it's not necessary and a very rude thing to do. I have known some girls that were very heavy. But, they took good care of themselves and were spotless clean. I think it's society's ignorance in this situation.

  2. It's unfortunate, but many bad apples have probably ruined the bunch.

Unless you wear a sign that explains you have a thyroid problem, unfortunately, people will assume you are too lazy to exercise.

The smelly part is the fact that heavier people sweat more, there's no denying it.  Folds of underarm and thigh fat can get smelly (shower or no shower).  Also, people assume that the obese probably are unable to reach some areas.

People can be quite cruel.  I'm sorry that you are experiencing such rudeness.

    I wish you well.

  3. I'm big too.  (I hate the term fat.  I'm big, but my body is not 100% adipose tissue.)  I have a huge work ethic.  I shower every day and feel gross if I don't.  I slap that deodorant on and brush my teeth.  You're right about skinny people that smell horrible.  I know of 2 such individuals.  One even claimed that he feels disgusting if he doesn't take a shower every night.  Yeah, he may shower every night, but he needs to use some deodorant and wash those clothes during the day too.

  4. I think my problem has been eating the wrong foods and using food as a drug.  Alcoholics can hide it better than foodaholics.  Your vices are there for anyone to see.  I used to be 332 pounds and have since reduced to 305 pounds.  I still have a long way to go but it is amazing the difference just that amount of weight makes to my sense of well being.

In any case, I sympathize with people that are heavy for obvious reasons.  I think there is a lot of hypocrisy out there leveled against fat people, as if it is an easy thing to deal with. People without the same problem don't really understand.  It is a common problem, the lack of the ability to put yourself in the situation of people unlike yourself.

I do think that because of their diet, fat people do have a problem with flatulence and the odor that can cause.  This can be a problem even if one has bathed and put on clean clothes that morning.  Since I have changed my diet and stopped using caffeine and carbonated soda and took a job which was much less sedentary I have much less of that.

Another problem with obesity is perspiration.  Since the body mass to surface ratio is low, it takes a lot less to make a fat person perspire, since for our size we have much less surface area to get rid of the heat.   In the summer as it is now in the US I end up with a nice sweat stain on just about any clothes I wear.   I love air conditioning and fans.

  5. That can be very hurtful. It is wrong when people do that. Just keep your head high and don't be bothered by what others say or do to distract or offend. You are unique and in fact, special. Tell yourself everyday that you are unique and very special because you really are special. Take care!(:=:)

  6. probably because they come in contact with lots of heavy people who carry all those qualities. i run into a lot of heavy people like that. i guess sometimes heavy people can be depressed from there weight, being teased etc... common side effects of depression can sometimes be poor hygiene and no not all heavy people smell. my best friend and fiance are heavy and neither one of them smell.

  7. It is just culture. Most of the fat people who do not have thyroid problems are thought as having a lack of self control and self image perhaps? Thin people think that fat people are just slobs because if they were gaining weight, they would do everything in their power to prevent from gaining weight before the weight becomes too extreme.

I have a thyroid condition as well. But unfortunately, my doctor is doesn't think it is a big deal and says that the extra weight is just me and not the thyroid. He won't treat it. Of course, I'm looking for a second opinion.

  8. I don't know I haven't judged anyone for being lazy based on their weight i judge laziness based on their actions

  9. Unfortunately, you are right.  It's called stereotyping, and it is very hurtful.

It is confirmed by psychological studies that people who are overweight, have visible mental or physical handicaps, etc. (in other words, who don't "present well") are victims of unwarranted prejudice and judgment.

People tend to stereotype the overweight, even doctors are guilty of this.  It's not nice, and it's not fair or right.

  10. It's just assumed that fat people can't reach around to wipe their asses very well, so people assume that any rancid odor in the air is due to an obese person..

  11. it is most likely because most people believe the reason for someone being fat is that they don't exercise and eat a lot. for the smelly part, I guess people connect fat with lazy and some people believe if your lazy, your too lazy too clean yourself.

  12. I've never heard anyone say things like that about an  overweight  person?

  13. Society has labeled people as such, so others just jumped on the band wagon as well. It's easier for some to label people, than it is to take the time to get to know them & see what's on the inside as well as the outside. You know you've got good hygiene habits & you're not lazy, & that's all that really matters. Family & friends know you too, so the others can take a flying leap.

  14. I've never heard that before.  I didn't know that people thought that about fat people.  You learn something new every day.

  15. its easy to finding fault in others,,,,,in scripture, take the plank out of your own eye, before one can take the speck out of another.   the world is shallow and bases everything on the material, God looks at the heart.  1Samuel 16:7
