Why do people always make fun of vegetarians?

It seems like I'm always hearing things, like when people say they hate vegetarians because their ridiculous (i heard that on a TV show). and the new Wendy's commercial ("meatetarian"). People seem to be making fun of them alot. My friend are always saying "HA, your a vegetarian" and once my friend flicked a piece of ham on me because she knows i hate it.

Why do people think were "weird" when all we want to do is stand up for animal rights? Its like its uncool to be friendly to animals. Whats your opinion?

Of course, some people tease vegetarians/vegans just because they're immature or uneducated, but I think that some people are intimidated; it takes a strong-willed person to go meatless! After all, you're doing something good for the world, and they (what with the flinging turkey) obviously aren't.

If it really bothers you, just turn the joke back around on them. If they say they don't care what you think about their diet choices, tell them not to share their opinions on yours. ;)

Why not? People make fun of others for everything. Just ignore it and they'll stop eventually. Or flick tofu at them. Just say exactly what they do, only the reverse. That helps point out how absurd they are being.

We're made better for it, and it truly illustrates how few people think for themselves....

probably because it threatens us to see someone willingly move down the food chain... or perhaps because you make us think about our own values and we dont want to think about it, but would rather eat dead beasts.

At first it bothered me too, but I learned to just let it go.

People make fun of vegetarians cause they either know it makes them upset or because they like too.

Everyone gets made fun of though and you have to learn that and let it go.

Also, you can get away with making fun of vegetarians without being considered politically incorrect.

I don't particularly mind it. I usually think the commercials are funny.

I wouldn't want some idiot throwing pieces of meat on me, though. That's not clever or funny, it's just rude.

You friend who flicked ham on you is immature and disrespectful.  If it wasn't vegetarianism, it would undoubtedly be something else.  Nobody in my real life (not friends, not family, not coworkers) does anything like that.  I'm going to guess that you haven't been vegetarian for a very long time... just because stuff like that usually stops after awhile.  People get bored with harassing you if they don't get the reaction they're looking for.

I have no idea why, but my friend's always say "You're such a weird vegetarian" and once, my sister tried to feed me some "vegetarian" soup but had beef in it. Thank goodness I caught that before the first bite! I don't know, people are so rude! Ooh, we should start a club! Haha, us vegetarians need to stick together! Just kidding, haha. Really, people need to lay off on the vegetarian jokes. It's insulting! They just wish they had the will power and bravery to stand up for what they believe in. (Dude, the little pencil on the side is telling me "Please correct your spelling. Ha!) Even my own parents make fun of me, but I just got used to ignoring them because they're ignorant losers. Sorry Mom and Dad.

As a general rule, people are afraid of whatever is different.  While everyone (whether they admit it or not) recognizes that a vegetarian diet is ethically superior, it's easier to make jokes than it is to make changes.

As far as TV is concerned, it is all financially motivated.  If Wendy's declared the health, environmental, and karmic benefits of a vegetarian diet- what would that do to their sales?

With regards to your friends, you need to get tougher and learn to ignore them- or educate them and point out exactly what it is that they are eating.  

Vegetarianism is not for sissies.

  People make fun of everything from ones race to being a vegetarian. Stop being so judgemental!  It seems this way of eating will be healthier for the body. I would just ignore those remarks and keep up the vegetarianess.
