Why do people always refer to kids under 2-3 in terms of months?

Why are kids referred to as 12 months old and not 1 year old, or 18 months old and not a year and a half old, etc? I've heard someone say their kid was 28 months old. Are new parents just so exhausted that they don't remember how to convert months to years? =)

  1. lol rite...thayts the same thing i was thinkin...i mean how hard is it to just say 2 or 3

  2. I called one womans child 2 and she told me "he's not two he's only 24 months"

    She was dead serious :\

  3. Because at that age a few months can make a huge difference in their development.  My kids are almost 2 (21 months) and they have a cousin who is 6 months older and he seems SO much more advanced.  In a year or two there won't really be a difference but at such a young age, months really do matter.

  4. Same reason pregnancies are counted by weeks. So much development is going on, it's measured by months instead of years. A 8 month old is developmentally different in MANY ways, compared to a 9 month old. Same with a 12 month old and a 13 month old. You cant just say they are both 1 year old, because they are both VERY different.

  5. No it's just that, that's how most doctors refer to the age of these young children. Plus if you've ever been around kids there is a huge difference from one month to the next when they are that young.

It may just be their way of identifying where the child is developmentally.

  6. i honestly don't know, it annoys me.
