Why do people answer questions...?

Question

when they don't understand the SUBJECT (lets call that "X") of the question and they respond by saying "X, I don't know what it is" or "What is X?"

Seems pointless, when they can look it up themselves on wikipedia or google, non?

To collect the 2 points.  Some questions can be looked up, like you say on google.  I think people like to have social interaction and help from others.  Social interaction is good.  Are you doping anything later tonight...?  :)

Beats me why they respond when they don't understand "subject X". LOL! Oops... Anyway, they shouldn't respond. But I agree with the previous posters, maybe it's just for the 2 points.

what annoys me is that you can spend lots of time giving an answer, making it the one that SHOULD be picked, then the asker goes and give the "Best Answer" status to someone who only replies "2 points"

It is pointless except, as others point out, to get the points. However, it is rude, and as Motorhead Fan pointed out, is completely insane and irritating when the two words "two points" is the entire answer and gets chosen for best answer.

yes, I have noticed people answering with things like

I don't know

sorry I don't know the answer

I think they just do it because even if that's all the 'help' you can give, you still get two points for answering!!

Because they are dumb, its supposed to be about helping people with their questions and answering them thoughtfully. Not just "because it isnt" or some simple response like that. Sorry that they did that to you. That happens to me too.

Not sure as I just tend to browse and if i see something of interest I'll look and then if I have no answer I browse again, but sometimes in the polls the questions are so off the wall they deserve an off the wall answer
