Why do people believe in god?

God is an evolved made up character. Jesus is a made up character copied from the old testament. Goggle (the greatest story ever told).

I guess most people feel the need to believe that there is a greater power out there much more powerful than human beings. Most people find comfort in knowing that even when they're all alone, with no one there by their side, there is someone their to confide in and to share their deepest secrets and thoughts with, through prayer.

this is a very controvercial topic to start and i am no scholar but also not athiast and i could possibly be a bad speller so watch out. i think the universe was created very early and creatures were allowed to evolve into so many branches to form all the species families(4.8 billion years ago) and kingdoms of living creatures we know today. if you ask for the existance of a god look no further than your mind. where did thought come from? where did the development of such a beautiful organ take place. animals had early methods of detecting food but our brain is so advanced from any other creature on the planet. why? if there is a god he has helped us develop within a mass chaos of evolution. one problem is you cant directly back up god with evidence because no one saw him do these things and i dont like to quote websites on this because they are full of c**p so ask me any spacifics and i can try to answer.

People have been brainwashed by Governments and Royals, Kings etc for 1,000's of years for complete control. What else scares people so much?? Nothing on Planet Earth. The best form of control on Earth is the threat of eternal h**l etc etc.

No, Jesus is not a made up character and it would be wrong to think that. Could you imagine living in a world where you die, with no hope of ever seeing your love one's? Sad, huh? Well, God gives us that hope. It is not wrong to live with hope, but it is wrong to think that there is not a higher being looking right down on us. Think..if atheist believe their is no God, then why are they called atheists? In other words, there is tons of facts which clearly demonstrate that Jesus did once walk on this earth. Have you every heard the saying, "History repeats itself", well Jesus will come again. Look to him for wisdom and understanding, I promise you won't be misled. Do you believe George Washington was our first president? If so, why? Obviously, someone recorded this on some paper, well, why doubt GOD. He is much greater than any president.

There are many answers a person can give for this question.  Each answer is probably right, if they're answering it for themselves.  And while I don't believe in a God the way I think you're meaning (you did mention Jesus after all) I believe that the main reason believe in God is Hope.  Just, Hope.  After all, don't we all need hope?

Logically it doesn't make sense. But "I" have seen proof thousands of times that God is real. You may not believe, but think about this.

If you believe in the big bang theory: There is more chance of the following happening than the big bang:

An atomic bomb is placed in the middle of a gigantic library that has billions of books. The bomb explodes, demolishing every square inch of the library, and out of the explosion comes one giant encylopedia. All the letters that were in the destroyed books have now been thrown in to the explosion-created encyclopedia, and they list all the words in the world, in perfect alphabetical order, every letter in place, nothing misspelled.

I'd say there's more of a chance of a God creating things than just some random occurance of random things. Besides, where did what created the big bang come from? And so on...

i am in the apostolic faith. we belive that jesus is real and that we need to be baptized in jesus name for the remission of our sins  then we shall recive the gift of the holy ghost [[just read acts 2:38]] so i wont be writing so much just go to my churches website it is bibleway57.com we dont have a huge church like you see on tv but we have a church where you come and praise god all you have to do is click on 'what we belive' and it will tell you what our faith belives in

that is an opinion, not a fact. if you believe in what you just stated, that is fine with the world because that is your choice.   people need something to believe in. when you have nothing else in this world, and you are in despair, no friends, no family, and have no one to turn to,  its nice to know that you have someone/something to look forward to even if it is nothing at all.

I find that lucky people tend to believe in god because they think that is why they are lucky.  Those people then become judgmental and decide that if people are unlucky, they must be bad people.

Some people have bad things happen and then life gets better, those people also tend to believe in god, because they think god made things better.

There are millions of good people who are very unlucky and never have any kind of good luck.  That is the reason I don't believe in god.

Sadly, in this age, you'd think that people would be able to understand things better without a deity, but sadly there is a lack of people interested in science. With this lack of interest, less and less people understand how things work - thus causing them to rely on a 2,000 year old book and thus causing them to believe the Earth is only 6,000 years old. Although science has disproved this terribly young age, they still believe it, because they have "faith".

To believe is defined as to "hold as true".  I hold that God exists so that I can honestly seek Him.  We can't honestly seek anything we don't hold as existing.  

Some seek God because they realize that there is no purpose for their existence unless God exists.  Others employ self deception to create imaginary purposes which they then "hold as true".

God, and Jesus is not a made up character!  Did you ever hear of the saying "Don't believe everything that you see?"  Well, now would be a good time for you to put that saying into effect.

Jesus was a real person who walked on this Earth.  And God was His Father.  Basically, I think God is unseen, and untouchable power.  God is the one that started everything.  Because in the beginning of time, there was nothing.  Actually, time is here all the constantly, and it never really begun, it's just time and it will keep on going.

But anyway, God created the universe, God created Jesus, and so forth.  Jesus was a real person.  I don't care what you or anyone else thinks!  I know He was, and I know that he walked on this Earth.
