Question:

Why do people believe that Southerners are dumb and that Mississippians don't wear shoes?

Another thing: I hate the fact that people always comment on my southern accent. I speak proper English and I sound like a normal educated person, so why does it matter?

  1. I think southern accents are cute...way exotic and s**y!

  2. What?!  I wish I had a southern-belle accent.  That's fcuking s**y!  But they think most Southerners are dumb because those areas are rural, and therefore their schools don't collect as much property tax as we do in the city, and therefore the schools aren't as good (I'm a good example of someone that lived and went to school in the south and then came to the big north and literally I was like 2 grades behind because the schools are so bad down south) - most southern places are more religious and stuff, and they don't have as much modern and progressive ideas and ways of living that people in the city do.  A lot of people in the south are really racist and narrow minded.  I went through h**l living in the south as a black girl, and this was even in the 90's.  (I'm 22 now).  But obviously that doesn't mean that there aren't normal and educated people that live there, but generally speaking it's not just a belief, it's actually true.  Haven't you ever become frustrated with the narrow people in the south?  I know I did!  And I thought it was that people in Kentucky didn't wear shoes!  That's what I always heard.  To answer your question, it doesn't matter at all.  You are who you are, and it's your responsibility to educate yourself further than these cheap a-s-s american schools do anyways.

  3. Some people are ignorant

  4. You are absolutely right on about the accent. It never fails to amaze me when someone says: Did your hear that southern draw or twang or the one that makes me ashamed to be a human; they sound like they have a mouth full of s@#t. So you are right on about that one. But the part about wearing shoes, I thought you were all pregnant and bare foot? Just kidding:) At least we hope you have a sense of humor, whether you wear shoes or not.

Being from California (LA) originally I think the problem stems from the fact that there are so many weird looking illiterate people walking around the streets that we don't notice them. Then when we get to a place like Mississippi we see people who, for lack of a better way to say it: Are more real acting, that makes those of us from the big city cautious and defensive which is a small humble way of saying we are ignorant about things that we are not familiar with and we don't understand. However, you probably need to calm down, hating ignorance is the first step to divide and conquer.
