Why do people build homes next to a highway?

These homes are really nice, most of them are around $500,000 or more, not including the land.

They build these home right next to a highway, sometimes within a few hundred feet. Then after a few years their complaining about the highway traffic noise.

Then if the state gets enough complaints they will spend your tax dollors putting up sound barriers which not only stops some of the noise, but it also stops travelers from seeing the countryside.

I think this is totally dumb. Why don't these people find land that is not next to a highway, at least a half mile or so?

These people can afford it I would assume, or do they take too much for granted?

Sometimes a highway is small, almost like a street, and then as the population increases it becomes more and more congested and disturbing.

While I don't disagree with your concept, I think you have made an incorrect assumption.  The guys who build the houses are usually developers who don't live there.  They build the houses there because it is far easier to haul the materials only a short distance over non-highway streets.  The folks who buy the houses and live there buy it because the house looks great.  It is only after the house gets built that they realize what a pain in the toches it is to have a highway that close by.

Dumb, perhaps, for most normal people but still good to deaf

citizens.  The less well-to-do also cannot afford better.   Have

visited some and know construction can hide most of the negative until owner is in open air.  The interiors can be quiet

as desired, vibration still, and with colored art glass windows the traffic lighting actually become a plus after sunset.  Earth

banked reinforced concrete can keep wayward gasoline

tank truck explosions out upon the motorway where Mother

Nature intended.
