Why do people buy imported and branded goods more than local ones?

why do people buy imported, branded and expensive goods when they can buy local, cheap goods?

I suppose the main reason would have to be vanity. A lot of people are very concerned to let others see what brands and names they are wearing or driving as in their minds it somehow increases their status. People with real class know that good taste has nothing to do with price, don't we!!
