Question:

Why do people buy mounted deer heads of deer they didnt personally kill it?

I have just always been under the impression that having the deer head mounted was for personal reasons like a certain memory (like your first or biggest) or like a personal trophy. I dont see why people want to pay for a mounted deer head when there is no personal attachment to it.

  1. Decoration? To make a room have a certain "feel". Maybe people brag about it and say they DID kill it... who knows. =P

  2. Ambiance. some people like that hunting lodge feel.

  3. it's like getting truck nuts its an extention of how much of a loser they are becuse they can't bear the idea of killing a bambi. But if its the talking ones then it's a whole nother story.

  4. I do not understand it but for some reason people buy them.

Hey  I got that there deer on the corner of main and 1st street.

  5. Because they are lazy bums that arent good enough to get their own trophy. because of these people there is a black market for big deer heads and a tremendous amount of poachers who shoo deer in the spotlights just so they can sell they rack. I hate people who do this.

For those who pick em up at a yard sale and just want the decoration, I have no problem with that.

Evo and anyone else who have bought or used mounts, if they are obtained legally I dont care, its your business, but believe this, I know of more than one person serving time in federal prison because they poached trophy deer, to seel the antlers. In some cases a trophy rack can bring 1500 to 5000 dollars depending on how bad people want them. Just bear in mind that deer head could be the result of greed, and criminal activity that robs all of us who abide by the seasons and the law. Not to mention the fact that many animals who may or may not have been killed during he hunting season are killed for their antlers and left to rot. That is why I get so upset when I think about people buying deer mounts they didnt take themselves in fairchase.

  6. Decoration

The same reason they hang paintings they didn't paint of places and women they have never seen or photos they didn't take of concerts they have never been to

  7. When we closed down our family fishing lodge we had numerous trophy size fish mounts that fishermen had donated and no place to put them so we sold them off. For example if a guy caught a 14 and a 12 pound bass he might donate the 12 pounder to the lodge and we would get it mounted for free so long as the taxidermist could put his name and number on the plate.

I cant speak for all the buyers but many of the fish mounts we sold went to local restaurants and businesses for use as decoration. Cracker barrel bought one.. a local fish restaurant bought one.. and several were donated to the state park.

I have bought numerous mounts off of ebay and I'll tell you why I bought them. I bought bluegill and sunfish mounts to make large displays for my trophy fish. I bought several upland bird mounts and other small game mounts as well to go along with my turkey mounts. Its cheaper to buy a mount than it is to pay to have one of yours mounted.

Not everyone who buys a mounted animal is some city jerk who will pretend its his. I'm sure idiots exist.. but I doubt they are as many as you might think.

  8. Because they feel like it. You the deer head police?

  9. There is a huge market for record book heads. There are collectors that will pay thousands for the right head. There is a lot of people that are having their heads stole because of this fact.I can't understand having a mount in your house that wasn't killed by you or a family member.

  10. Some people do not hunt, but want a country hunting cabin feel to certain rooms.  It is kind of like putting an old saw blade or milk can in a room.  It just changes the aura.

Other people collect them, especially if the antlers are large or somehow unique.

I could not personally put up a deer mount that I, or my family, did not shoot.  But, it is no big deal if someone else does.

  11. I share your incredulity at this. Regards, Larry.

  12. why should it bother you what other people do.....why do you have to buy so many shoes

  13. why do people by paintings that they didn't paint? nobody knows why people do what they do. trying to understand 'why' is a waste of time and energy.

  14. G'Day mate some people like the deer head it might be a good feature to a room they have but they might not be hunter's.Just because they don't have gun it doesn't mean they don't support hunter's for what we do.Some people just can't do it but they like the look of a stuffed animal.cheers mate

  15. I will never understand it either.

Unfortunately, there is not enough left to mount after I eat the crittur.

  16. It's classic 1500 year old European decor.

    The classics never die.

Castles, Manors and Great Halls would have been remiss had they not included mounts as decoration.

It really is an honorable thing. It's actually a way of continuing to not let a piece of the animal go to waste, even if all it's good for is decoration. If you are not too enthused by hunting, look at it this way. Purchasing a used mount may save the life of a deer!

  17. vanity purposes...  maybe they love the look?
