  1. hey beautiful

it is short for football and ppl (like me ) just find it easier to say !!

i got used to saying it in convos and speaking fast so that was how i used to say it and it went on from there... other ppl say it cause they hear ppl saying it like that so they say it..

  2. you all have it wrong football is soccer.

    Rugby is union

because we play predominately nrl in the eastern states and the aussie love for shortening words/ sentences rugby league football is footy over here in the east , ditto for the west with afl being the big draw card

technically neither afl or nrl or union is footy truth be told... lol

either way i love all 4 codes!

  3. Cause at one time there was only one type of 'footy' played in sydney and that was league.

    AFL was played by mexicans.

    Soccer by g**s

and no one cared about union.

So footy just meant the only type of football anyone cared about. Of course this has all changed now - and for the better. For this reason I don't think soccer will ever shrug off the 'soccer' tag they hate so much. Calling it football might make sense in other countries but not here.

What is AFL called in the southern states? I'm sure they have all gone through the same thing.

  4. well it is like in Europe and Brazil they call soccer football so it depends on location and up-bringing

  5. I liked condas answer, once Rugby League WAS all that mattered in Sydney, the toughest code in the toughest, fastest town !

  6. spoken like a true tiger supporter
