Why do people call a number that either hung up on them or didn't leave a message?

I agree.  If it's important you should leave a message, otherwise I will not bother to call you back.

curiosity, distrust of their cell phones ability to record a message or maybe think it cut out, boredom, loneliness.

Maybe because they have caller ID and can see who called.

Additionally, not everyone leaves messages anymore.  Sometimes these calls could be wrong numbers, other times they could be people who just decided not to leave a message, or they could be in an area with bad cell coverage.

Because they're losers and never get any phone calls.  Then when someone calls they get all excited and want to find out who it is, because they have no life.  Does that answer your question???

it is scary not to know who called .  i have had people call and ask what i wanted when i just got a wrong number.

It is obviously not important enough to leave a message, or it is too personal to leave on someone's answering machine so that others are able to hear it.
