Question:

Why do people care about walk-up songs?

Seriously -- whatever is the attraction? Wanna upload the iPod with all the relevant tunes? Feint defense against merited charges of bandwagoning? Trying to win a call-in contest?

I'm just way, way behind the generational curve on this topic. What is the interest in these songs?

  1. When Charlie Sheen (as reliever Ricky Vaughn) walked up to with the song "Wild Thing" playing in the background in the 1989 movie "Major League", it worked well enough that the REAL Major League copied it.

Of course, it brought rally monkeys and the like.

  2. I've been wondering the same thing. I would guess that these people probably don't understand the game enough to appreciate it based on its' own merits, and need to occupy their minds with something trivial.

Personally I think that the person who came up with the idea of using prerecorded music every time a hitter comes to the plate should be publicly beaten, along with the person who decided that the crowd needs a scoreboard to tell them when to make noise, and the person who invented the wave.

  3. Walk up songs don't mean anything to me.

  4. I don't understand the fascination with them either.  I could care less and it actually saves me time because I'm able to skip over about 20% of the questions posted here because if it mentions "what is so and so's walk up song" I won't even open up the question.

Now if we can get rid of the following questions as well:

    a) Will the Yankees make the playoffs?

    b) Who will win the Cy Young (or MVP, or ROY)?

    c) I'm xx years old and throw yy MPH, is that good?

    d) Which bat is better?

    e) How can they do trades after the deadline?

then this place would be much more enjoyable.

edit: I just thought of a couple of more repetitive questions.

    f) How do I break in my glove?

    g) How can I throw the ball harder (or farther)?

  5. I guess when you're uncertain if you know enough to ask a pertinent or intelligent baseball question, walk up songs are as good a topic as any.

  6. i dont get what ur asking

  7. It pumps people up for the at bat

  8. Motivation. For Most. Others are just for the h**l of it.

  9. There are a lot of music junkies out there like me who, when they hear a song.. you have an URGE to want to know what that song is. Its not that they like the music more than the the game itself.. its just in them to want to know.. if you like it don't you want to know what it is?

and baseball players like getting pumped up ^^

  10. I can't tell you.  But if I were a baseball player, then my walk-up song would be the theme song from "Sanford and Son."

  11. I could care less what the person's walk-up song is but the people on here that ask about them are just the teen and early 20 fringe that really have nothing better to do at Baseball games than concentrate on what Salsa music Bobby Abreu is walking up to.  They want to look intelligent to the friends so they try and come up with knowledge that is useless unless you have imbided 14 natural lights before the game.

I guess we are all just a little more concerned with the game itself and not worried about all the hoopla that MLB has now installed to bring in the fringe fan and get their money.  Most of these people had not ever heard of Yaz until the other day when he had heart surgery and now have tributes to him posted all over the internet claiming that he was their favorite for years.  They all like to talk about him winning the Triple Crown...on Seattle Slew!

  12. Utterchaos said it best & to the point

  13. Beats me.  I'm as behind on the topic as you are.

  14. Well, chirpster...maybe they just like the way the song goes and want to get info on it so they may purchase said song?

  15. I miss the good old days when we had the organ player, and there were no commercials in the middle of games AT THE STADIUM!!!

  16. There is no use for them.  The just make the game longer.  Most batter won't leave the on deck circle until their music starts.  This delays the game.  They should be on the way to the plate as soon as the previous play is over and not wait for the stupid music.  I go to a baseball game for baseball not for a concert.
