Why do people choose to d it?

Why do you think people choose to drink and drive, they know its not safe, but why do they still do it?

Usually...it's because they're drunk. It's common that people who even have consciously told themselves they're not going to drink and drive, will end up drunk and because they haven't made plans with any other people, they end up just jumping into a car and driving off. For the rest who don't make the effort, it's exactly that: they don't make the effort out of sheer laziness.

A combination of Ignorance, Stupidity, Rebelliousness and also a lack of want to be 'one of those people' who do the right thing, are usually the early signs of one becomign a drink driver.

I think that when you are drunk you have a false idea of what your abilities are,  your judgment is impaired and you are also more likely to take risks.

Although obviously there are the others who drive their car to the pub while completely sober and plan to drive home half cut....

i can answer that very well because my father is unfortunately like that. it could be because of many various reasons. for example, my father grew up in a very bad childhood. times were tough & his family was alchoholics. they were the violent type of alcoholics. anyway...the fact that it's what my dad grew up with...it was a major contribution to why he drinks today. Of course, by no means, drinking is not the way to go; however, people drink to "escape troubles," or even just because they like to or don't care. Say they may have had a rough day at work...well they go home and "drink to unwind." Most times people that drink don't even realize that they are getting drunk because that's what alcohol does to you. Consequently, they go into their car and endanger their life and also the lives of everyone else in the car or within distance of the car. Drinking simply is a disease that people have because of many different things. Why do they do it? Why do companies produce beer? Well, this is just really a fact of life...it's not good but it happens all over. The only way to eliminate this problem is by getting the personal psychological help, attending drinking classes, or BY GETTING COMPANIES TO NOT MAKE BEER IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Drunk people think they can do everything a sober person can do, they are not in their right state of mind.

Why a person is not responsible enough to either take a bus or have someone drive him to the bar is beyond me.

The best word to describe that behavior is: irresponsible!

OK, let me answer this from the perspective of someone who has done this more than I can count.  I am certainly not proud of it either.

When I drink, I keep drinking, therefore,  I become very drunk.  I am an alcoholic and I know this.   When I am drunk, I make very stupid decisions therefore, I get in the car and go without really thinking of the possible consequences.  It's disgusting when I sober up and really think about how selfish and ignorant it really is.  (yes, I agree with the other answer) There is no excuse for drinking and driving but someone who is an alcoholic does not see it this way when they are all liquored up.  That's why I have chose not to drink at all because I can't drink responsibly.  Even after wrecking my Explorer into a pole while very very drunk, I still did not learn my lesson.  I am just being honest here.  There are people out there who can drink and be responsible and people who can't.  Does it make them selfish and ignorant?  Yes, it does, when they are under the influence of alcohol, so best thing is to not drink at all and spare your life and the life of others.  I could of never forgiven myself if I had hurt someone because of my stupidity.
