If it supposively opens the airway, how is raising your arms differ from just standing up straight? Could raising your arms just be a tool to help the person stand up straight and not be slumped over? Allowing gravity to help?

  1. it helps to open the passages to your lungs.  usually when u are chocking you need those certain muscles to open up so putting your hands behind your head and lifting your elbows helps to open up the passages.

  2. When you arms are down you could be slumping which could cause you airway to curve or bend, thus keeping whatever you choking on from going down or coming out the mouth. When you raise you arms (or someone does it for you) it straightens out the airway and the obstruction can either go down or come out the mouth.

  3. I think it is supposed to open up your airways or something.
