Why should people who make a lot of money be given tax breaks?

When you make a purchase you pay a tax. The more expensive the purchase, the higher the tax. Every "class" pays the same tax when buying something, It doesn't matter how wealthy you are.

So shouldn't it be, the more you make the more you pay in taxes?

Isn't that only fair?

  1. ok say we all (rich and poor) pay the same..(not from america bye the way)...it's not gonna cover,or help pay the dept you/we are in....deficit is too high..an anyway why should the poor get it any better than us rich folk...we earned the right to live better lifestyles...we don't care if you starve to death..ten more can replace you...an thats just the way of the world...you can't buy congress with food stamps...an that's just how us rich guy's like it...at the end of the day you got rich/redneck...or south....or..poor/progressive...as in redistrubute the wealth....north..

  2. People complain about the wealthy paying more in taxes because, in essence the wealthy would pay more money than those with less money, even if they were taxed the same percentage. However the real question is "what is fair"?

If we adopt a flat tax, it is likely that taxation among the poor will become a serious issue. 15% of a small paycheck might not be much but, if you are just living paycheck to paycheck, this might mean that you'll fall behind on your mortgage payments if you help your son pay for his classes at the community college. If you are rich, then good for you. 15% is maybe $15,000 but you've still got enough money to pay for the repairs to your son's new Chrystler, that he crashed last week, and you might just have enough left over that you won't have to settle on Cancun for a family vacation, next week.

For people who support a progressive tax, fairness is decided by the welfare of the majority. Basically the quality of life lived by the majority of people decides how fairly the tax has been distributed. It is really "fair" to say that the poor should pay the same percentage as the rich if risks greatly lowing their standard of living? What is the purpose of taxation then? Is it to be fair to everyone or improve the general welfare among the majority of people?

Also, in my personal opinion, rich people cannot play the "minority group" card. They are not a disadvantaged minority. They are a privileged minority.  These are two totally different things. For example would you say that southern slave owners shouldn't have given up their slaves because they were the minority ( they really were an impressively small minority...) and denying them their right to their property would be discriminatory?  NO!
However the majority of people would say that the internment of the Japanese-American citizens, during WWII, was discriminatory. Do you see the difference here? Are the rich suffering at the hands of the poor?

So the top 5% of wage earners pay 70% of their earnings to the government? They're still living a pretty d**n good life that close to the top. Much better than me, I must say! Which means, as far as I care, that even with progressive tax, everything is still how it was meant to be. I'll have to wait another week to see if my broken-down, piece of s**t car will ever cruise the streets agian while some kid with, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, has to drive his dad's old lexus because he crashed the Chrystler again... I didn't want to come off so biased but my family is very poor and trying their hardest to put me through college. I'd go back and revise this mess but my time is better spent studying.

  3. The Wealthy people shouldn't have to pay higher taxes. Taxes should be equal for everyone.
