  1. The term 'nationalistic' is ugly.  It conjures up things like The Boxer Rebellion and North Korea.

'Patriotic' has a nice ring to it, so some people simply replace the term to refer to their extreme, militaristic nationalism.

  2. Because they are kinda are similar, people dont always realize the differance.  Patriotic... your country... Nationalism... your nation... not all countries are melting pots like the USA either, so it blends to the same meaning.

  3. people are idiots

  4. Patriotism is being proud of, and honoring your country. Supporting our troops is an act of Patriotism for example.

Nationalism is more about being centered around your country and national people (not necessarily the country). It is also the core of many aggressor political systems, such as Fascism. In Nationalism, you are more likely ready to assume that your country has rights outside of your countries borders.

  5. Same reason that MANY confuse 'sentimentality' with 'sentiment.'

The former has produced some of thee most cringe making so-called Country n Western Muzak's lyrics.

    Sash.
