Question:

Why do people consider me STUPID for donating to charities?

My brother told this lady to aske me for money instead of him because his comment was, "Well, she's stupid enough to give her money to charity & give it to any & everybody!"

He felt that way just because I donated $5 for the Revlon Walk for the Breast Cancer for women. I don't have much income, & that was all I was able to donate. But he acted like I donated MILLIONS.

  1. You are NOT stupid. Your brother showed his stupidity by speaking like that about you. Any woman who supports breast cancer is investing in her own future. Good for you.

  2. In this world it's a fight to survive and if you give away a bit of what you've worked  for to someone who "hasn't worked as hard" or needs help, you are throwing away what you've worked for. Also, some people believe some of these charities are just set ups, wrong I know, but people believe it.

  3. Firstly, that wasn't fair on his part.

None the less, donating money to a lot of organizations is just useless. The companies funnel massive percentages of your money to their own bank accounts. You can expect only a couple cents from that $5 to actually put to use.

Your brother wasn't right to say that though.

  4. THEY ARE MAD,,AND FEELING EMBARASSED BECAUSE YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING GOOD TO HELP A CAUSE YOU BELIEVE IN, HE ALSO MAD BECAUSE HE WANTED YOU TO GIVE HIM THAT 5 DOLLARS AND HE KNOW THAT HE CAN'T BREAST CANCER,,HE JUST A FOOL AND DONT CARE ABOUT THE COMMUNITY,,KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

  5. That does not sound stupid. Giving it to a homeless person with a beer and cigarette in their hand would be stupid.

Giving to a valid charity is nice. They are not giving people like you.

  6. He's just STUPID period. Your brother.

I wanted to give to the United ***** College Fund, myself.

  7. cause they really the stupid ones its ur money and ur business end of story

  8. Well, some people don't understand the principal of sowing and reaping. What you sow you reap. Tell your brother to mind his own business.

  9. Your brother doesn't understand charity -- he doesn't understand what good even a small donation does, nor does he understand what the benefits of giving are to the *giver*.

Don't believe the other poster who said the money goes to waste -- it does not. I've worked with nonprofit organizations all of my professional life, many of them in poor countries, and what they do with so little is amazing. There are also endless numbers of success stories regarding charity -- for instance, the March of Dimes was formed to address childhood polio, but had to change its work because childhood polio has all but been eradicated. Another example: when I was a teen back in the 1970s, there was so much more trash alongside roadways and in public spaces in the USA than there is now -- that's because of the efforts of volunteers and people who donated to causes. And on and on and on.

So the next time he makes such an insulting comment, just look at him, smile, and say you feel sorry for him because, with that attitude, he'll never understand how GREAT it feels to make a difference in the world. And then ignore him. Keep giving if you are moved to do so and believe the cause is credible.
