  1. Indecisiveness. Just checking if there is anything they are in the mood for.

  2. Because they may depend on the primary food producer of the house... or they could just be idiots

  3. Refrigerators cause the formation of small black holes which allow wormholes to open between parallel universes, some of which contain additional food. Over the decades people have realized that successive trips to the fridge may coincide with the appearance of such a wormhole and the spontaneous addition of food.

  4. Because we're greedy. We live in hope that what we want will be there and that we won't have to search.

Also because many people live in a house with more than just themselves. They think that perhaps they've been to the shop or something, thus providing a new source of food.

  5. Maybe because they are not the ones who prepare food in the house.

It is not uncommon for children and especially one of the spouses (usually the husband) to become dependent on the primary food preparer of the house (mother/wife in many cultures) to expect that food that they can consume and that they prefer will be available to them.  A lot depends on the primary food maker of the house...willingness, stamina to maintain a schedule.
