Why do people contradict themselves?

I have heard people say they don't agree with abortion , yet are pro war .....

all of us have a selective moral code. what is wrong for others is okay for us an vice versa. no one thinks completely alike and therefore anyone else different from us is automatically an idiot or a crazy person. this reminds me of a george carlin quote.  "Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?" i guess this habit is part of our survival instinct. we do what benefits us because in the end we are selfish.
