Why do people cut their lawns?

I know this might seem like a stupid question but...

Why do people cut the grass? Is it because for psychological reasons? Spiritual reasons, lol? Does it really make people feel better or promise a place in heaven? Does it show our status in society?

What negative environmental effects dose it have?...is cutting the grass really worth it? What's everyone's thoughts about grass cutting?

  1. I wish my grass was emo so it would cut itself.

I don't like mine too long I think it looks like c**p. I enjoy being able to walk on it barefoot, it gives me peace. I don't like it to be a hide out for bugs rodents, and roaches. I wouldn't mind living in the woods an not having a lawn, but I do not have that option. Well anyhow, it doesn't matter I have a manual reel mower and an electric edger so I don't really pollute while keeping it short and attractive.

  2. most towns will fine you for not cutting grass. our yard would look like c**p if i didn't cut grass. we have a lot of flower gardens and long grass would make flowers look bad.

  3. they cut there lawns cuz it looks more nice...

    not cuz they are insane.

  4. Snakes will come and it could scratch you

  5. so they  don't have to pay someone else

  6. Actually, Cheryl, that's a great question.  We do mow the front yard, which we inherited from the previous owners.  It took me years to weed it manually, and there are still 2 or 3 kinds of grass in it that grow differently.  We don't mow a lot, but it starts looking weird and scraggly after a few weeks in the spring and summer.  So there's the 'keeping up appearances' in the neighborhood thing, and not wanting to attract the eye of code enforcement and get them looking at every little thing.

Most people who have lawns and who mow have nice even lawns, but they mow too frequently and often bag up the cuttings.  Longer grass that is mowed with a mulching mower retains moisture longer and is pretty much self-fertilizing.

We took out the grass around the fruit trees in the backyard this winter, and planted native species, including some California bunch grasses.  The purple needlegrass isn't much to look at but the seed is good for the birds.  The deergrass, however, can look pretty sharp, in my opinion.  I planted 2 and both are doing well so far.  So no mowing there, and even though our mower is electric, it still uses power and has an impact environmentally.

I'd rip out the front yard too, but we have a young grandson and I'll keep the grass until he's somewhat older.  At which point there could be another grandchild, so who knows!

  7. its about looks.

you have a good cut lawn, good looks.

  8. It was a thing british royalty did.   Look at how huge houses are getting now; we're trying to become like they were.   My neighbors are getting too close now.   I used to let it grow and burn the 'lawn' every spring.   Now I need to mow it or people complain.   Am thinking of tilling it all up and planting wheat or something.

  9. its so there lawn wont look like ****. loll<3

  10. I use a Reel mower so i dont effect the environment.

  11. taller, overgrown grass, does not only look grotesque, but it promotes snakes and other rodents that i am sure you do not want around.

  12. Grass competes better with the weeds when kept short.

The weeds grow tall, dry out, and become: a fire hazard, eyesore, and refuge for pests.

  13. I put whisky on mine so it grows half-cut !!

  14. Um, so it doesn't grow into a jungle.

You really need to stop over analyzing things...

  15. Well, just don't cut yours for a few weeks, and I bet you'll answer your own question.

As for environmental impact, that's so ridiculous I won't even justify it with an answer.
