I Don't understand why. I'm guessing it's because of the lack of knowledge and technology any other ideas of why?

  1. ahem,  they're not productive anymore, they're a drain on medical services and supplies, and not profitable to live anymore, or they're more wise and more brave, so the state wipes them out before they change the state.

  2. I definitely think it's due to the lack of technology and medical care.  In this society people don't do things unless it's for the good of the whole, and since these people are "useless" there's no reason to care for them anyway, and no long term care and prevention plans are put in place for the youth either.  And I don't think this society would give medical assistance to any ONE person.

  3. It's just another one of her crazed exaggerations.
