Why do people die in long runs, such as half marathons?

its just its a regular occurance 4 people to die in runs such as the gt north, and i was wondering if any1 knows any examples of causes of death. i'm doing the gt north this yr, and am training and all, but i'm a little scared now!

  1. dehydration is a brutal part of running long distances.


  2. you shouldnt be scared bc as long as your training and not overdoing it you will be fine.  some people that dont train well then go out to run a half marathon in the heat can get heat strokes.  dont be afraid its not common.

  4. most of the causes are because the heat is too intense, they are dehydrated or they had some kind of health problem such as heart disease or if their family has a high risk of heart attacks.

All of the above is correct, but there's another reason for death after a long run, and that is hypothermia.  Even while it's hot outside, after a long run, your body can actually loose so much heat that it'll shut down the heart.  This is why most runners are greeted at the finish line with thermal blankets.
