Why do people dislike the name Peter/Pete?

why do people dislike the name Peter/Pete to much? I am quite fond of it, but it doesn't get good reactions from 90% of the people I talked to while trying to decide on a name for my baby. I know about the associations with the male part, but that doesnt' seem to be the problem, as most of them don't even know about it.

Probably just because it is old fashioned. I don't hate the name peter but I wouldn't name my child that because it doesn't appeal to me I think because it reminds me of older people.

There is nothing wrong with the name. It's not one of my favorites, but it's much better than all of the Aidan, Jayden, Kayden etc. names.

I love the name Pete! It makes me think of MacGyver's boss and he was a great guy!

I also think of songwriter Peter Allen, composer Petr Tchaikovsky, artist Peter Rubens, and news anchor Peter Jennings!

I think maybe people don't like the name Peter/Pete because it's so common. For me personally every Pete or Peter I knew what either and obnoxious kid, or a pervert - so needless to say I think of those kids when hear that name. Course when naming a baby it's a good idea to think about nicknames or names kids might call them in school when they are young. And as you mentioned Peter is pretty much the same thing as calling your child d**k - but that's a real name too. Peter/Pete is not nearly as horrible as d**k, but it's really what you want to name your child. I never asked anyone else what they thought of the name I named my daughter. So if you like and don't think your child will hate you for it, then just go w/the name.

I love the name Peter because he was of the disciples of Jesus, and he also was nicknamed "The Rock", that is what Jesus called him, so if God be for Peter who can be against him?

I like it a lot..   my 2 year old nephew is Peter and he's a real cutie. The name is cute for a little one and is nice on an adult as well.

Do what I do and don't tell anyone the names you're thinking of.  No matter what you choose...there will be one person that loves it and one person that doesn't.   What matters most is that YOU like the name...don't let anyone else persuade your initial opinion of the name you choose.

I would surmise that people think that it is too common.  It's not a bad name; however.  I personally wouldn't use it just because it doesn't hit the right note with me.

I know it can also be a nickname for a p***s, though I do believe that the trend of this slang term came and went pretty fast.  I found this out recently from my mom, and this was the first time I'd even heard about it.  So, maybe it was around the 60s or 70s...

EDIT: Peter does mean rock, but is from Latin.  It's a cognate of the word petrified nonetheless.

I don't have anything against the name Peter, but I just find it too old. Pete, weather a nickname for Peter, or an diminutive form of Peter, on the other hand I just don't like. Isn't Pete (or a similar spelling of the word) a type of mud or something?

And as the male part I haven't got a clue. Peter means Rock and is a Hebrew Name.

i like it but my bus driver is named peter and i swear he is like a pedofile.

the rumor is, he has mirrors on the bottom of his shoes so that when the girls get on the bus he can see up their dresses.
