Why do people do this??

I'm looking out my dining room window right now and i'm watching a father holding his son....maybe 1 yr old, while mowing the lawn.

Does anyone else consider this EXTREMELY dangerous? I just saw his mom driving a 4 wheeler and holding him. My kids aren't even allowed to be outside when the lawn is being mowed, just for the simple fact that my husband run over something and hit them with it. It enrages me to see such a thing. Owell. I'll have my phone handy just in case the kids falls off.

  1. Yeah I would have to agree with you on that. Just doesn't seem to safe for a number of reasons. But people can amaze me when it comes to their children.

  2. I wouldn't talk to the police, If it's really bothering you go have a talk with him.

  3. I think it's crazy I don't think he realizes what can happen lawn mowers are dangerous. didn't he hear about the little boy who got killed by one. my daughter isn't allowed outside when the lawn is being mowed the lawn usually gets mowed early in the morning so we can avoid the tantrum of her wanting to go outside but can't I think some one should be informed it's not safe I would be pissed if my husband was holding my 3 year old on while mowing the lawn let alone a one year old! please anyone who said it's not a big deal obviously doesn't care about the safety of their kids that is a big deal things can go terrible wrong in just a second grown adults even get hurt on lawn mowers.

  4. I think its more dangerous leaving a 1 year old kid in the house alone then holding a child mowing the lawn, seriously I would take holding a kid doing that then not watching the child. Then again its a riding lawn mower,

on top of that, sounds like more of e peen jealously then worrying about what your neighborrs are doing.

Dont you have better things to do with your time?

  5. Im with you..my sister lets her 5 year old drive a ride on mower! I cannot believe it...the dog could run in front of her...she could panic!

  6. I find that really irresponsible as well.  My husband works with a lady who has a prosthetic leg because she was dropped while being held on a riding mower.  It's just something that I could not imagine myself doing.  I would never be able to live with myself if I inflicted undue pain on my child for doing something I should have known better than to do.

  7. Well, I'm guilty... LOL  I've put on a baby carrier and cut the lawn before.. my baby actually loved it.  We also have a trailer to hook on the back that I let my 4.5 yr olds right in while cutting also.  Kids love it!  I'm careful of how I drive and nothing bad has ever happened.

We also have a John Deere Gator and again, the baby rides on that.  Sometimes I'll hold him while on it but now, we've fastened a carseat in the back so he can ride safely.  He absolutely loves it.

So really, parenting is a judgement call.  You find this type of behavior irresponsible but I'm sure there are things you do that others may view in the same way.

Accidents happen now matter how safe you try to be.  The trick is, to have fun, but be careful :)

  8. idk, i think it's w.e just as you said.

call the police if you wish. but the most youll probably do is start problems with your neighbors and/or get them in trouble.

if anything happenes call the police.

but if not. don't wory about it.

    just worry about your family.

  9. i find that irresponsible as well.....and if it's a loud lawn-mower then it could possibly hurt the child's ears as well.

thats good of you though to have the phone handy in case something happens! good for you!

  10. I agree with you.  I don't care if those d**n things go slower than h**l, they can kick up a rock or branch that can do ahell of damage.  My brother as a kid got a rock tossed at him while the neighbor was cutting his lawn bout 20 feet away, and it shattered his forearm.

I saw the answers on this and had to go looking for statistics on childhood accidents, and it's actually pretty d**n sad that these parents are willing or stupid enough to even consider a ridable object with whirling blades as a "fun and safe ride."    I happen to like my kid's fingers and toes right where they are...ATTACHED!!!

  11. You should call the police-especially if he's doing it right now-its child endangerment.  get em on the phone!!!

  12. Give me a break! EXTREMELY dangerous - exagerating a little, aren't we?

  13. I personally would not do that but if the father and mother thinks its safe then there is nothing you can do about it. Is it a riding lawn mower? I know people who let there kids go for rides on them. They think its fun. I am sure the parents would not put there baby in harms way on purpose. Just relax!

  14. Probably not the safest or smartest thing to do, but you need to mind your own business.  He is not intentionally abusing her or anything, give it a rest. I'm sure you are not a perfect parent either.  What are you doing looking out the window when you should be watching your kids?

Edit - my child is ALWAYS in a carseat and I never have and never will hold here while I drive WTF???  Those things are not only stupid and dangerous, but ILLEGAL.  Holding your child while you mow the lawn is stupid and dangerous, but i don't know of any law prohibiting it.

Edit - to you people who do not know how to read - nobody is condoning this or saying it's okay, it is not okay and is extremely dangerous and stupid and something i would NEVER do.  As someone else mentioned, it is also hard on their ears due to the loud noise.  What people are saying is what can you do about it???

  15. Very irresponsible.  Not only is it dangerous if the kid were to fall off if on the riding mower, but what about the noise level and how that is affecting their hearing?  Some parents really don't think.  I have a reel mower and I don't let me daughter come anywhere near me when i'm mowing and obviously that is a heckuva lot safer then a gas powered mower!

  16. OMG get a life. people have been doing things like that for ever. When I was a little kid I played outside all day without checking in I stood in the car and my mother spanked me and I lived. If a man wants to moe the lawn with HIS son leave him alone. Maybe you should stay out of other peoples lives and get away from the computer and get one of your own!!

  17. People do this because they are irresponsible and stupid.  If you don't believe that then just look at some of the answers you've gotten.  My mother was an emergency room nurse and saw several instances where kids got cut to ribbons by riding lawnmowers. The danger of falling off and getting cut is why they make them so they cut off if you leave the seat, which of course doesn't work if you are still in the seat and your child is under the blades.  If it sn't illegal it should be!!

  18. I don't really see that big of a problem with that, I mean as long as his dad is holding on to him, the 4 wheeler is a little too much, he's not old enough to even be held on one of those, but lawn mowers can't go that fast...my dad used to let me ride on his lap while he was mowing, the chance of the little boy getting his with something isn't very much since he is sitting on the mower, if he was just in the yard playing then yeah he could possibly get hit easier

  19. my uncles ex wifes mother was holding their daughter on the mower when she was little like that. the grama went to set her off the back of the mower so she could go in the house while she put the mower up, she bumped the lever and kicked the mower in reverse and ran over the little girl, it cut her to pieces, she lived thank god, but she had a long hard recovery and is scarred for life,  i would call the law in  a heartbeat if  i saw someone doing something like this.i wouldnt wait for the baby to fall off.  kids squirm and wiggle it only takes a half a second to drop one.

thumbs down away, the truth is the truth, you wont be so quick to brush it off when your baby is laying in a hospital bed with cuts and slices all over her and chunks of meat taken off, now will you?
