  1. I drive to work because its a dozen miles away and even if I was willing to bike there, there is no bike rack to lock my bike to.  In fact almost no where seems to have bike racks anymore have you noticed?  Add to that the fact that often there are no sidewalks and half the time when there are you aren't allowed to bike on them, it seems like our rules and laws are trying to outlaw healthy environmentally healthy ways of getting around.  Plus its faster to drive and a lot of people aren't that thrilled with the idea of all that exercise.  The other day a guy I know told me he would love to ride his bike to work but we have helmet laws and he won't wear a helmet because then he ends up with hat hair all day and that just wouldn't work for him.  There are tons of excuses to drive but mostly I think its just that driving is easier.

  2. I live in a small rural town, with my parents, and the valley bus doesn't come out here. It's about 30 minutes DRIVE to town, where there's a grocery store, etc. I have to be here with them right now, so we car pool together ANYWHERE we have to go.

I wish there were more viable transportation options out here, like in New York. Public transportation SUCKS out here!

  3. the economy is built that way

I'm all for providing more pedestrian friendly roads and more trails

but you shouldn't condemn those who adhere to a popular way of life for Americans for years

sure, it's not good for the environment and there is public transportation, but how would you like going to work in the city from a little town with a bunch of rude, loud, dirty, or even dangerous people every day?

plus, if everyone used public transportation, the world would be chaotic, the crime rate would be higher, people would get sick more, and more money would have to be spent building new ways of public transportation to support the population

we would have to rebuild entire cities

why waste the money on it?

  4. I live in a rural area and it is to far for me to walk or ride and I also have children. It'd be to much of a haul for them too. If you speaking of a big city--I have no idea.

  5. America is lazy, its hot or cold, to far, to dangerous, 10 s*x offenders live .5 miles around me..etc,.

  6. because america has been brain washed in to thinking faster is always faster... so they spend on gas and other expenses just because... just like electricity...we use it because it makes things easier... sure we kill the planet but they dont care... i think that something bad will happen and we will lose electricity and most wont be able to live... some people cant even go camping without something electrical or gas powered...

  7. Because there are no flippin sidewalks and bike trails!!  I HATE that!  I love walking and riding my bike, but as soon as I leave my subdivision, I'm on a not-very safe higher speed road.  It really wouldn't be so hard for them just to make a little path when they pave the main road, but the only place we even have sidewalks in right in the middle of our town.  So annoying.

  8. Because I'm 51, it's 17.4 miles (one way) to work, and there's no way I'm riding UP the hill on 2222 during the day, and DOWN said hill at night.

  9. I agree with the answers of Lamborama, Henry Ate My Eggo, Crazypudley and Kay. I am 62 and still a daily biker but there are times that I have to go to the city (some 250 kms.) which I could not do on my bike. So out of NECESSITY and for CONVENIENCE, I have to use my car and sometimes use public conveyances.......
