Why do people fail to appreciate art?

Not sure everybody fails to appreciate art.  Many people appreciate art.  I`d like to think lots of people appreciate something with art, in art.

Some art is really expensive. I love art. I don't get to spend enough time visiting museums or reading books. I've never really studied art. I think too often people (or maybe society) tends to put down art and its importance, value to society. It's one of the first programs to be cut. It doesn't necessarily make a lot of money compared to other industries. Starving artists. People will say, So and so is an artist. Do they make a living? Oh, another artist. It's not respected or highly regarded unless you are one of the top artists.

Since I love all art, I don't understand it but I have certainly heard the criticism. I wanted to follow a path of art but it's hard to make a living. A lot of people don't tend to take artists seriously. I think capitalism has done a lot of damage to art.

Should life really be only about making money? Shouldn't that be a means to an end?

edit: Art tends to be limited to the people that can afford it. High society types. A lot of average people just can't afford and don't see the value because they are so busy.

I've read that in the middle east (and heard from people) that art is not appreciated there. They don't have much. They value science and math more. Art is frivolous. That's what I get. My father who is American but of Lebanese descent also pushed me towards math and science. My organic chemistry instructor who is Iranian said that her family pushed her towards science even though she would prefer to have studied English.

I think a lot more people would appreciate art if more time and effort were devoted to it. It's beautiful. We need more beauty in life, not less.

edit: Art is about helping people understand life and express themselves. That's how I feel when I look at art. It's amazing how creative some people are.

They don't have the time or the inclination to think about it.  Much art si made inaccessible by the average man by the artist so they have themselves to blame for that aspect of it.
