Why do people fall into a "comfortable stare" where they can't stop staring but are aware that its happening

Sometimes I will just focus on something across a room but wont be able to pull myself from looking at it. Someone can be talking to me and I will be aware of the conversation and know that I am doing it, but can't pull away!!

Maybe its just relaxing. Cuz most times when im staring off on one object im relax and just thinking, even if someones talking to me. Im just feel good and kinda like i escaped for a brief moment.

I think it is because people don't have enough down time. If you find yourself doing this you probably need more sleep or more time to yourself to relax.

Me too.  It's usually when I'm tired.

I'm not sure. I do the same. It feels like a release off my mind for some reason.

when i do that, its usually because i'm tired and i dont realize it yet.
