Question:

Why do people feel compelled to act like experts on the internet?

Why is it that people seem to present themselves as experts in every field from economics to politics to climate science on the Internet?

I have been noticing that any place that provides an opportunity for commenting on any particular news article, has numerous posts by people asserting their expertise.

Do these people actually believe that anyone that really matters, or possess any real knowledge of the given subject actually care what crazy opinions (or 'facts') they harbour?

  1. It depends on the poster.

Some people wish to enter intelligent discussion.

Some people want to help the asker.

And some people view Yahoo! as a place to promote their political agenda.

  2. they probly hae no lives so they try to feel cool adn smart on the internet lol(i know i suck as spelling)

  3. Perhaps some people are genuinely interested in those topics and don't get as much of a chance in their everyday lives to express those interests. You could be misconstruing "asserting their expertise" with plain asserting their opinion, which may be misinformed or wrong, though regardless, they have a public forum for their "voice" to be heard, as well as an audience - why would they pass up the opportunity?
