Why do people get sad if they feel that no on care if they live or die?

To know that someone cares can really mean a lot to a person. I know there have been a lot of times when I was depressed and wished that someone cared, wanted to feel important, like I mattered, like their was a reason to exist.

I eventually got over it, more or less, but it is still nice to know that people care.
