Why do people give priority to feral cats over native wildlife ?

I keep asking this question, no one answers it.

They say feral cat's are part of nature. Not true. Feral cats were brought to Europe from Egypt, and from Europe to here. They are not part of the nature of North America.

People say it's inhumane to remove the feral cats and euthenize them. Well how humane is it to unleash a VERY prolific killing machine on the animals that ARE native to North America. YOu know those cute cudly chipmunks and songbirds that cats are so good at wiping out ?

How would you like to be mauled by a lion ? How humane is that. That is what you are doing buy Spay Neuter and Return.

Why don't the native North American Animals that god put here get a priority over cats that were brought here by Man ?

What about horse? Why aren't horses eaten in North america?  The answer is the same reason dogs and cats aren't eatan. They are companion animals- our friends

A cat whether a house cat or a lion is an OBLIGATE carnivore meaning they eat meat to survive. That's the way this crappy world works. So their hunting is natural

every animal is a part of nature but I guess you meant cats are not natural to North America. So what, You are not natural to here unless you are a native american which I doubt. What does being natural to the continent have to o with anything?

highways are not natural nor are cars and they kill alot more animals then cats

So if natural to the region isn't the problem since you are here unnaturally their killing is to you I guess. So birds kill. Little ones eat worms hawks eat mice and other little animals just like cats do. Should they be killed for trying to survive?

Which people? I'm perfectly aware that feral and outdoor cats are destructive to wildlife. My cat is spayed and is kept indoors. I have no problem with euthanizing feral cats, but sadly, that won't solve the problem of stupid people who allow their cats to roam outside and/or who do not spay or neuter their pets. Communities need to pass laws that treat cats similar to dogs, making it illegal for cats to roam unattended off of the owner's property. Until that happens, bird species will continue to be eradicated, and every second or third question in this section will be related to pregnancy. Unfortunately, you will never need to pass an IQ test to become a cat owner.

Because animal rights nutjobs like PETA (and Ken) act like killing the cats is genocide. Feral cats have no natural place in North America and should be removed permanantly. Unfortunately, no politician wants to be labelled as a kitten murderer, so Spay/Neuter and Return is the compromise we end up with. At least it's better than nothing.

edit: Ken, if I ever did meet you in person I would call you a nutjob. And I'd be happy to refute your points.

1. The asker doesn't say that cats' behavior is unnatural, just that cats are not a natural part of the North American ecosystem. As for your comment about horses being eaten, that doesn't have anything to do with the question.

2. Biologically there is virtually no difference between a Native American and later immigrants. Both are humans and both have the same impact on the environment. Cats, however, are only in America because humans brought them here. This means the environment has not adapted to them.

3. I doubt cars kill more animals than cats. What's your evidence for this phony statistic? I have 1 cat that kills a mouse or two every day and 3 cars that kill an animal about once per decade.

4. Birds eating smaller animals is not the same as cats eating other animals. Wild, native birds are part of the food chain. Introduced cats are not. It's like letting a lion loose in New York City and saying that it's natural for it to eat people.

5. The ethics of eating meat are not being debated here. Why even bring it up?

6. I'll admit it's not impossible that God intended for humans to bring cats to America and let them wipe out other animals, but I doubt it.

I understand where you are coming from.  This country is full of soft hearted people that think that euthanizing cats or dogs is wrong, but there's no regulations on breeders, how much they breed, and where they do it.  What is done with all the cats and dogs that are left homeless?  They run around causing problems like car accidents, destruction of property, and they kill native wildlife.  It may not be pretty, but euthanasia is the best thing for these animals.  Without it they become a detriment to urban and rural areas.
