why would you want your kid to have a name that a million other people have? why not be original?

There's a few different reasons.
First off, names have history. Naming your child after a figure in your religion, or after a relative you love, or a name from your ethnic culture...it MEANS something. It's more meaningful than a name parents just thought up and gave you because they thought it sounded good.
Second, it' simply easier. Nobody's going to mispronounce Emma, or tease a boy because he's called Thomas! Most people don't have negetive reactions to common names.
Also, names are popular for a reason. The names on the top of the list are often very nice names that fit in with the time. There are also timeless classics, like Sarah or Charlotte or Jonathan. These are beautful names that have been used through the years, and they shouldn't be thrown away.
Hope I helped!
