This past weekend a lot of people died on Long Island from the strong waves. A few people are still missing. Most of these deaths, or maybe all of them, involved people who went in the ocean and could not swim. I find that extremely unsafe. Just learn how to swim, it isn't hard!!!

  1. Rip currents and under-tow at sea may have caught these victims who may not be good swimmers. The best precaution is never to swim when there are big waves breaking the shore. And there must be good adult swimmers around whenever one swims. Some people take added precautions by wearing flippers or using large ring floats. The flippers come in handy for a fast swim to safety when sharks are around.

  2. cause they are stupid and want to learn how to swim

  3. stupidity

  4. That is just an ignorant question. Those people were pulled out by unusually strong riptides or currents. These currents are hard to find as they are underwater. Sometimes you can spot them by the way the waves are rolling out, but if you don't know what you're looking for you won't see them. Riptides are so powerful they can pull you miles out to see, however most will only pull you a few hundred yards out. The problem is if you fight the riptide it will only hold onto you longer. If you ever get caught in one ride it out, you won't be in there long and eventually you'll be spit out. I got caught in one that took me a quarter of a mile out in less than 45 seconds, so you can see how powerful they are. The key is not to fight it, because if you do you will drown. That's most likely how those people did drown was by fighting the riptide. I don't know if they knew how to swim or not, but before you post an ignorant question like that educate yourself on the circumstances first.

  5. Not only that, many people don't understand what a rip-current is, which is probably one of the easiest ways for people to panic and drown. Or they get rescued if they're lucky.

I think it's because people think, "Oh there's life guards, so they'll save me if I need it."  It's kinda like how people's brains fall out whenever they go to Theme Parks too.
