Why do people goto restaurants, enjoy their meal, smile, and tip poorly?

Seriously, someone explain this to me.

How in todays day and age, where we all should know what the proper percentage is for tipping.. COUNTLESS adults goto restaurants, some in poor moods, yet some in great moods. They sit down, smile at you, you have to wait their when they decided to have last-minute-jitters about wether chicken is a good idea, you suggest a certain steak, she doesn't go for it, but then changers her mind soon as the chicken finishes. You switch is for her, loves it, her 130 year old mother is having a great time... You hand her the check of $45.... and she tips $4.

What's wrong with these people?

Do they think a great tip is 10%? Or do they think 20% of $45 is $4? What's the deal?

Correct answer gets her $4 PayPal'ed to them.

  1. people that go out not very often are usually not able to understand all that goes into a servers life, northamerica, unlike the rest of the planet hasnt quite figured out to set at least 15% on the bill prior to presenting the cheque, which in turn for once a year patrons usually provides a 5 % gratuity. Those that dine out often are aware of what goodor bad service is, and usually wil pay more then the standard 15 , then there is the generation that was brought up on tipping , on the pretax amount, which is kinda rude . I often find people will tip to what the taxes are. Personally, i wouldnt dream of leaving less then 5 dollars, even if the bill totalled 20 dolars. What can you buy with 4 dollars? not much ...

  2. I hardly ever tip because menu prices are already astronomically high. The last time I tried the waitress threw it back at me saying, "Dont bother". And I haven't bothered since. Many people are deserving, yes, but will it be to little every time. We work just as hard for our money as you do, and I don't like being bullied into a tip. I don't know what the proper percentage is either.

  3. There are a lot of people who think that it's perfectly reasonable for somebody to get paid $2.13 an hour to serve them. The IRS calculates the tips a waiter is supposed to make based on their gross. If you get stiffed on the tip, you pay taxes on that money you should have gotten anyway. A customer who didn't tip for good service stole money out of your pocket.

  4. I really don't want your $4 but I totally know where you are coming from.

I think these people have never (obviously) worked as a tipped employee before. They don't realize that a huge percent of their server's income comes from their tips, and they also don't realize how aware their server is about the tip they leave.

I had a large party one time, mostly adults in their mid to late 20's, they started to order their food, it so happened we were out of a few things they wanted, so I recommended some other things they would like. Of course, they enjoyed the things I suggested. Then they ordered desert and of course we were out of what they wanted again, so I suggested something else, which they liked. As a tip they left me their change from their $80 bill, and by change I mean coins. Yeah, not even a dollar. So I know how you feel. And to top it all off I worked in a state where they payed you way less (4/hr) than minimum wage because you were a tipped employee and they legally could.

The thing about serving is, there will always be the tables that leave you ****, you may have a whole day with S****y tips, but it all will equal out in the long run and you should always be averaging a good amount.

Sorry to be so long, i'm bored...

  5. they pay for the meal that pays the waiter's salary

  6. Sometimes it is expensive to go out for dinner for some people, so maybe the staff get the brunt of it. Also some people are against tipping that much because in some places (like Canada) waiters are paid the same wage as many other people...just a thought?

  7. Well... some people weren't brought up right!  Really.  They just don't realize wait staff make way BELOW min. wage and rely on tips.  Seriously, they make less than 5 bucks an hour.  You can't live on that.

It's not fair to say "why don't they get another job if they don't like the pay?"  Not always easy.  Some may not have the skills for any other type of work.  Some may need flexible hours because of school or homelife.

And if they did get another job, who would bring you your food?  We'd all have to eat at fast food joints.  Waiters work hard and put up with a lot.  It's more than bringing food to tables, they are liasons to the chef, they make people feel welcome, they make your dining experience pleasant, etc... they deserve a tip!!

Hopefully, this will get the word out!!

  8. Honestly, I had to think about how much gratuity is on a meal these days. I would have thought 10% myself since that was the going rate when I worked as a server. Maybe some people just don't know. On the other hand, sometimes people don't find the service to be what they expected for the price of the meal. My husband is VERY picky. If the server isn't observant enough and doesn't get his tea glass filled when he empties it, he leaves a bad tip. I think thats a little mean since he can guzzle down tea like their going to stop making it tomorrow but thats a prime example of people who won't leave a good tip. My husband is a nice guy and he smiles all the time but if he feels the service wasn't good he won't leave a good tip.

  9. lets face the facts here some people are just cheap and dont think to leave a tip other people leave a tip depending on how the service was then you have those people who follow the rules and leave 10% then u got those big tippers everyones fave

  10. I really think that the wage system should be fixed, why should anyone work for tips- minimum wage should be one that you can live on- other countries have restaurants that pay the award and still are in business. It shouldn't be about anger at a poor lady who probably thought she was doing the right thing- does management have a sign saying10% for average service 20% for good and provide a calculator so that you can get the maths correct- no and they don't pay you well either, and the government doesn't care enough to put in place a decent wage system for you. Be angry, but not at the little old lady

  11. I think some people really don't know their math. I also think people figure that they will never see their waitor/waitress again, so giving a poor tip doesn't affect them in the slightest. It's not fair, but they don't care, because they're saving money.

  12. NO CLASS

  13. coz they think that giving tip is like i bein very low....

    and middle class

  14. Why don't waiters/waitresses complain when they get to much of a tip? By goodness it can't be that its okay to get MORE but not LESS.

My in laws give $1 a head.. period. They were raised that way and there is no changing them. Wait folks need to get over the whole "entitlement" thing and get a different job if they can't handle how tips work.

One guy may give you 10 dollars.. one may give you 4 for the same check amount. It all works itself out in the end.. get over it.
