Food turns into calories, calories turn into energy. No energy = Death! Just like plants, they eat nutrients from the ground and turn energy from the sun into chlorophyll which they turn into food they can "digest" and turn into energy to grow live and breed. All living organism need energy, we all get it differently though ; )

Eating help to provide energy to move and even breath and sleep..

If we do not eat, we'll be cold as the body could not use the fats to block off coldness.

And, if we don't eat, our cells do not regenerate and produce new healthy cells especially at a growing age.
