  1. we hiccup because we have consumed to much oxygen in too short amount of time. For instance, when you laugh histerically, you suck in a lot of air to try and catch your breath. thats why you usually get hiccups after you have been laughing alot or for a long time...


  2. The diaphragm muscle is the large muscle under your lungs and runs from front to back. When you breathe in it moves down to give the lungs room to expand and when you breathe in it moves back up. Sometimes the diaphragm goes into spasm and doesn't move properly with the lungs and this is the hiccup. The diaphragm is supplied by the vagus nerve and the nerves from the 3rd, 4th and 5th cervical vertebrae. Sometimes a neck injury or spasm can irritate the C3,4,5 nerves and cause hiccups.
