Why do people hide there real identity while chatting?

Some people are married or has significant others that they don't want to know they are online chatting, their significant others could be online chatting too.

But more importantly, in today's society with easy access to everything, what if you rub someone the wrong way, they are crazed and do a people finder for you and the next thing you know some nut case is knocking at your door or stalking you everywhere.

It's best to remain anonymous until you feel comfortable to meet the person.  Crazy people usually don't hide for long, we sometimes ignore our warning signs, but we pick up on it early on.

Some people are not happy with themselves in life so they create a fantasy life for themselves online. It is safe for them because they cannot be seen. Also they can feel comfortable talking about stuff that they normally would not.

insecure about who they are, don't like who they are, immature, and some know if they told the truth no one would talk to them.

b/c there are a lot of creeps on the internet... and most of us don't want to be bothered -- you can't trust people that you don't know
