Question:

Why do people in Alabama drive on the inside (left) lane?

Every time I go through Alabama on Interstate 65, drivers get into the left lane and will not move over when a faster car comes up behind them. Signs are clearly posted that say "Slower Traffic Keep Right", but they ignore them. I know they are Alabama drivers because of the license plates. From my travels, I have observed that all states have some drivers like this, but in Alabama, it is the majority of the drivers. Someone please help me understand this behavior.

  1. "Slower Traffic" refers to any vehicle with a diamond shaped reflective decal on it (vehicles incapable of going fast such as tractors), semi-trucks and busses which are required to travel at a lower speed limit, usually 55.  The sign is not for cars, pickup trucks, or motorcycles.

  2. i find that in all the states i have been to-not just alabama-those drivers with alabama plates might not be natives they probably came from another state and brought their lousy driving habits with them. have you been in new jersey lately.

  3. The term "faster" refers to those that are traveling WITHIN the posted speed limit, so if you are going 85MPH, you are a law breaker, not a faster car, and you have no right to expect others to move for you.

The term "slower" refers to those going slower than the limit, not those going slower than you.

  4. Because they are each and every one of them by god the fastest driver on the road.  At least that is the reason I use to explain why Ontario drivers never get the flog outta the way.

Do they speed up when you try to pass them on the right?

added:  The law where I live mandates that cars stay out of the left lane except to pass when on a multi-lane highway.  Funny how people choose to ignore THAT law and use the excuse that they don't have to move because maybe I am breaking the law.  Situational ethics don't impress me much.
