Why do people in germany love the song "country roads"?

My dad had been to germany several times on bussiness, and everytime he goes, he hears this song played frequently at beer houses and such. Why is this song so popular over in germany?

Germans just love folksy songs about wandering in the mountains. It's a monster hit in Japan, too. Weird.

Same reason David Hasselhoff is a popular singer over there.  No accounting for taste.
