Why do people in modern dance barefooted?

Well, the way they dance has movements that are a lot more smother without shoes.

Some of the movement is just easier with bare feet, but you can buy pad things if you want, It also looks more natural and all, good question though

Everyone else who has answered you appears to be ignorant of the history of modern dance. Dancing barefoot is not about the practical aspects of the style and the benefits of executing the movements without shoes. It was all about the PHILOSOPHICAL approach to dance as a REACTION to ballet.

The introductory paragraph on Wikipedia backs this up:

"In the early 1900s two woman dancers in America, Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis, as well as one in Germany, Mary Wigman, started a rebellion against the rigid constraints of Classical Ballet. Shedding the authoritarian controls surrounding classical ballet technique, costume and shoes, these early modern dance pioneers focused on creative self-expression rather than on technical virtuosity."

So the point is: it may well be EASIER to execute turns and such WITH shoes, but these founders of modern dance set out to ditch everything associated with ballet - including shoes. They felt that all those positions, preparations and proper dance wear were unnatural. Bare feet are as natural as you can get. Hence, they danced in bare feet. The movement, then, flowed out of that premise, not the other way around.

The style of movement is easier to do in bare feet. also, a lot of older dance styles are done in bare feet
