Why do people insist on spelling a lot, alot?

It's easy to say "because they're dumb!", but the truth is, common phrases that start out as 2 words often turn into one word over time. Tomorrow, another, and because are all examples. Although "a lot" as two words is standard and correct now, it wouldn't be at all surprising if "alot" becomes standard over the next 100 years.

I do it all the time.  Bad habit.  I just get typing fast and it gets stuck together.
