  1. LoL,those answers were funny.the answer your looking for is, yes the mayans calender was extremely accurate(more accurate then the one we use now) but the mayans were extremely skilled/advanced astronomers but the mayans also calculated in 2012 the planet is goin to do something that has never been done before(or atleast not recorded in history).the earth will make a major shift in its axis. over 60 degrees.this will cause the ocean to move.the planet will become totally different.alaska will become a desert and africa will be frozen and planetary changes of that matter.but basically thats what the mayans discovered.the major shift in earth's axis.

  2. The Maya accurately predicted Lunar phases, eclipses, and planetary motions for centuries ahead.  They were extremely good astronomers.  They predicted the "little ice age" of the 1600's, the Tungunaska event, Halley's comet, and several other major astronomical events since then.  However, their calendar simply ends on Dec 21, 2012.  In the few years preceding this event, their solar system model shows the introduction of a new planet... the "mythical" Planet X... Nibiru.

  3. Most people don't believe that garbage, just the gullible and poorly educated fall for stuff that like, the same types probably believe in the validity of UFOS.

  4. Because they watched a television show that made absurd claims.  Because they are mindless middle schoolers, they believed what they saw on TV.  They told their friends and their friends believed it because they were mindless middle school students.  These mindless middle school students then only talk to people who share their beliefs and only read websites that agree with their doomsday philosophy.  In four years there will be a large number of ex-middle school students who still have a future.  Material to learn, tests to take, mates to woo, and taxes to be paid.

  5. The Mayan calender is in cycles rather than spacific months and the last ccle listed ends in 2010. They predicted their own end and 2010 is the end of the cycle that includes their demise.

  6. Don't think of it as the end, just a beginning of a new era.

  7. because they are gullable, and cant use there own cmmen sence.

  8. Because the Mayans created a ridiculously accurate calendar and for some reason it completely ends in December of 2012.

  9. It boils down to a misunderstanding of the Mayan calendar and simple end-of-the-world alarmism that shows up all the time.  The Mayans had a short-cycle calendar that was sort of similar to the one we use now.  They also had a long-cycle calendar that went on for 5000 years.

It's that long-cycle calendar that's going to end in 2012, which people have (incorrectly) assumed means it's an end-of-the-world prediction, when no prediction of that sort was ever made (at least not by the Mayans).  To further support their doomsday scenario, they're inventing all sorts of pseudo-scientific (i.e. sounds technical but has no basis in reality) nonsense, such as pending collision with a rogue planet, some sort of galactic alignment, etc.

In other words, they're looking at their calendars and saying "Oh no!  The calendar on my wall stops at December 31, 2008!  That must mean the world is going to end!"  Since it's a vague prediction, they're making up all sorts of stories to explain how it's going to happen.

This sort of prediction happens all the time, sometimes based in pseudo-science, sometimes based in religion... and to my knowledge, the world hasn't ended yet.

What I really want to know is: why are people so anxious for the world to end?  These stories show up so often, it's like people *want* the apocalypse to show up.
