  1. When people are not familiar with something, they tend to disrespect it.

  2. Everyone here has got it perfectly. When you are young you tend to want to be liked or accepted, and it's more hurtful when thoughtless brainless comments are directed at you. Kids can be vampires.

Real friends (as you get older, you realize you only had a handful of them in your whole life) back you all the way in whatever you do. Trendy friends (which there a plenty, coming and going all the time) don't.

You're playing the coolest sport on earth and you're good at it. They just haven't found out about it yet.

  3. I lived in Michigan for 18 years before going to Purdue (Northwest Indiana) for college, so i now go through having to explain what hockey is, and why its better than basketball and baseball (i cant pick hockey over football, or football over hockey personally, because i played both and had great times in both.  theyre two completely different sports but both involve the same amount of intensity and athleticism).  like you, I hear people always telling me how hockey is g*y and how nobody plays it, or how nobody watches it.  thats great, but when i ask them what they hate about it, or what else they can say about the sport they have no answers.  "oh its boring".  no its not, you just dont know whats going on and you cant follow the puck.  people reject it because they live in a boring state with limited perspective on sports and they just dont understand the game.  people who dont know sh*t about hockey, and therefore say its g*y and that they hate it, are only jealous because they know youre better than them.  hockey was something they never had the chance to play, while you probably had the chance to play their favorite sports and either did, or you didnt because you chose hockey instead.  they never got the opportunity to enjoy such a fast paced, physical, and skill intensive sport.  its the hardest sport to play on the planet and that cant be argued.  no sport combines more different skills while being so unlike any other sport.  people dont know how to skate, they dont have the coordination to control a small, heavy and flat object while it slides on an ice surface with a 4 foot stick that has only a slight curve with which to handle the puck.  people dont understand it and dont have what it takes to play the game, so they make excuses that make them feel better about themselves.  just let them know youre better than them and tell em to stfu.

add - who's giving me thumbs down?  people from the baseball section?  i played baseball for 7 years and went to the all star game 5 years out of those 7.  I quit because it was boring, regardless of how good I was, and started playing lacrosse.  I have experienced more sports than any of you jerkoffs who want to give me thumbs down.  This is the hockey section so you better support the fastest, fastest growing, and coolest game on Earth.

dewman, good analysis, but I think youre wrong about football.  football requires heart, intensity, and extreme athletic ability.  football is the closest thing to war short of picking up a rifle.  there are certain aspects of the game you cannot always appreciate without playing, just like hockey.

for the most part though, you hit the other sports on the head, especially basketball and baseball.

  4. "Aww, it's g*y" The put down of choice for those not smart enough to come up with something original.

  5. As you get older you will find that many people are like that toward anything.

If they don't understand something, they put it down. It's basic human ignorance.

  6. Hockey is my favorite sport.

I know someone that thinks hockey is "so stupid" and basketball is God's gift.

I live in California, so hockey is definitely not the main sport here. Just like stated before, I believe people are just narrow-minded and only stick to the few "popular" sports that are out there.

  7. Well if you are from a place anywhere like where I am from it is because they have no idea what hockey is and have already committed themselves to another sport. They call it g*y because they know it is cooler than what they like and they just don't want to admit it. You never here them say another sport that they only like a little bit g*y. So I guess they are afraid of new things and maybe slightly jealous that you know more about it than them.

  8. because there jelous of u being so good and are trying to make u sad about playing hockey untill u dont wanna play just stick n there and if they say hockeys g*y say well wat are you doing right now if they are participateing in that activity

  9. They just say that because either they're jealous of how well you play, or they're just bad at it so the only thing they can think to do is make fun of it.

  10. That is because hockey is too hard for them.  When people don't understand something or can't do something, then they will ridicule it to make themselves feel better.  Also most Americans have the attention span of a moth when it comes to sports.  Seems to me that hockey is a mix of all the best aspects of all the sports most Americans love.

What is football?... A fast choreographed game where guys destroy eachother once a week for 17 weeks, with actual game time significantly less than 60 minutes on the clock.  Hockey, a fast game where guys destroy eachother 3 to 4 times a week for 6 months, not choreographed, and plays the full 60 minute clock time.  Might I add the Stanley Cup Finalists in the NHL play more games than a full NFL season with playoffs.  Never too much of a good thing.

What is boxing?...  A sport where the main goal is to knock a guy out, which many times happens in one round (3 minutes).  Hockey, a sport where players can fight while on skates and WITHOUT gloves, plus the game goes on after a knock down.

What is basketball?...  A sport with good speed and finesse with ZERO contact allowed in the rules, where teamwork takes second fiddle next to the individual.  Just ask Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.  Also the last 2 minutes of a game last FOREVER.  Hockey a sport with great speed and finesse at much higher speeds, on ice, and all while your opponent is looking to knock you on your @ss.

What is baseball?...  An excuse to go and relax with a beer and take in a game, while really just there for the beer.  A game which is proceeds at a snail's pace, especially if you have a pitcher that takes a minute between every pitch.  Hockey, a game of non-stop action where you go to watch the game.

Moral of the story... The ONLY reason hockey is not more popular is because the media doesn't cover it.

I grew up a HUGE baseball fan because my favorite team was televised on network TV 4 or 5 times a month.  After the baseball strike, I stopped being a huge fan and changed to basketball.  It helped that my high school team won state two years in a row also.  Basketball coverage was popular in the late '90s with Jordan and everything, so I watched it.  THEN came the magical moment when my parents first got cable in '96.  I was then able to watch hockey.  I always loved hockey, but the only time I was able to watch it was the Olympics.  I have been a HUGE hockey fan ever since, and will NEVER change.  Once a hockey fan, always a hockey fan.  Now I still watch the other sports, but I really don't care about them that much.

The best part of hockey is that you can be 6'9" or 5'6" and still be a superstar.  Any athlete can play hockey.
